The inception of the Nile Book Awards dates back to 2009, courtesy of Clare Kybird from the Khartoum International Community School and Cathy Kreutter from the International School of Uganda. Initially, participation was limited to these two institutions. However, in 2015, an invitation was extended by Jeanette Brooker to include schools situated along the Nile. The pivotal year of 2019 saw the expansion of the awards at the AISA conference in Addis Ababa, welcoming all international schools across Africa to participate and marking the introduction of the Delta Nile category. In 2023 the criteria was rewritten to focus on books that highlight African authors and themes.
